Households
How shared accounts, transactions, and settings are organized, and when to use more than one household.
A household contains your accounts, transactions, categories, merchants, tags, rules, and recurring payments. Signing up creates one with you as the owner, and you can invite others to share it. Everyone signs in separately and sees the same data.
Your login, profile, subscription, and API tokens belong to you. Financial data and organization settings belong to the household. There are no private accounts or transactions inside it. Keep anything other members shouldn't see in a separate household.
Household settings
The owner can change the household's name, photo, and base currency in Settings → Edit household. The household's timezone decides which day balance snapshots fall on. It's set from your device when the household is created and can't be changed in the app yet.
Settings → Preferences has two options shared by the whole household: recurring suggestions, and Advanced Transaction Details, which shows extra identifiers that help when contacting support.
Multiple households
One Penny account can belong to several independent households. Penny doesn't combine their totals. To label spending by person or project within one household, use tags.
To create one, open the household switcher at the top of Settings and choose Create New Household. You own the new household, and it starts with default categories and a Cash account. Switch between households from the same place.
Your subscription covers every household you own.
Leaving or deleting a household
To leave or delete a household, or transfer ownership, contact us. These actions aren't available in the app yet.
An owner must transfer ownership before leaving, or delete the household. Deleting a household permanently removes its financial data but keeps your Penny account.
